What Can and Can’t You Use to Clean Hardwood Floors?
You’d be forgiven that at Green Steam Carpet Cleaners, we only know about carpets. While it is true that giving your carpets the really deep-down clean you desire is our speciality, it is far from the only thing around your house we are able to clean. Beyond professional carpet cleaning, we can also clean hardwood floors. This is welcomed news to many homeowners, because hardwood floors cleaning is more difficult than you may realize. Your hardwood floors are a major investment and if you’re cleaning them wrong you could be ruining them! For instance, did you know all of this?
#1 Don’t use a wet mop! In fact, wet mops are the number one cause of damage for hardwood floors. Sloshing a soaking wet mop back and forth over your floors is a bad idea, as this will actually ruin the finish and damage the wood itself. If you stop to think about it, you probably already know this. What happens when wood gets wet? It warps! A mop used for cleaning hardwood floors should only be slightly damp.
#2 Never use harsh chemical cleaners. Ammonia will discolor, deteriorate, and dull the finish. Using ammonia to clean a wood floor will take years off of its life. As well, you should avoid anything that is extremely harsh, like bleach. It is best to avoid harsh chemicals found in stores all together. Most of the cleaning products sold in grocery stores aren’t right for wood. They’ll damage the finish if used over a long period of time.
#3 Avoid vinegar too. If you can’t use chemicals, the answer must be to put together a DIY cleaning solution with vinegar, right? Actually, this is not true. A quick Google search will tell you how wonderful ammonia is for many cleaning projects, but your hardwood floors aren’t one of them.
#4 Trust the professionals! This cleaning task is too important to get wrong. Our team will deep clean and prep your floor, leaving it more beautiful than you ever thought possible. We use a professional high speed rotating brush machine to lay down a specialty cleaner, agitate it, and then bring it back up with squeegees and a vacuum. This leaves the floor dry and ready to walk on.
